Electronic Data Gathering, Analysis & Retrieval (EDGAR)

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission requires all companies, foreign and domestic, to file registration statements, periodic reports, and other forms electronically through EDGAR. Anyone can access and download this information for free.

Although annual reports to shareholders are not included, forms 10-K, 10-Q, and many other disclosure documents are available. The advanced search option allows you to search the full text of EDGAR filings from the last four years.

Federal Reserve Economic Data

From the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, Federal Reserve Economic Data (FRED) is a database of over 61,000 economic data time series from 54 sources, including data on consumer price index, monthly interest rates, real GDP, exchange rates, and much more.

Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC)

The mission of the Securities and Exchange Commission is to protect investors, maintain fair, orderly, and efficient markets, and facilitate capital formation.

SECFilings offers a free membership to set up email and RSS alerts for specified companies as new filings are made. Company filings are available as PDF, Word, and Excel files. 

RR Donnelley Financial Resources & Tools provides reference guides and white papers as well as newsletters and alerts.

SEC Info allows searching of SEC EDGAR and CSA (Canadian Securities Administrators) SEDAR documents. Free registration is required. 

Exchanges

The New York Stock Exchange

NASDAQ provideslinks to the NASDAQ, NASDAQ 100, Dow Jones Industrial Average, and S&P 500.

Yahoo Finance provides stock quotes (delayed by 15-20 minutes) and historical US stock quotes (typically back to 1970). Yahoo also has a multitude of financial and general company information in a very user-friendly format.

Once you get past the splash advertisement, Big Charts is a current, easy-to-use investment research site. This site provides access to research tools like interactive charts, quotes, industry analysis, intraday stock screeners, as well as market news and commentary. Historical quotes retrieve exact and split-adjusted stock price information and split adjustment factors as far back as January 1985.

SEC Forms

The SEC describes the most common corporate filings in a PDF document. Many of the filings are made through the EDGAR system and are available electronically. 

Westlaw Business provides a chart of SEC Form Types and Definitions.

Wolters Kluwer Law & Business lists SEC Form Types by securities act or alphabetically.
