Practice Ready Litigation Research: Finding Judge/Attorney/Expert Witness Info

Westlaw -- Profiler

To get there, from the homepage of Westlaw, click "Browse -- Tools" and then scroll down to find "Profiler". 

Westlaw Profiler provides biographical information about attorneys, judges, experts, arbitrators and intellectual property professionals. You can search by names, organization name, location, practice area/area of expertise or keywords. It also generates reports that reflect their work histories. 

  • Expert Challenge Report (expert witness and judge search)
    • Provides information from litigation where the expert witness was challenged for admissibility.
  • Expert Evaluator Report (expert witness search)
    • Analysis of an expert witness's litigation history.
  • Litigation History Report (attorney and judge search)
    • Analyzes attorney or judge's historical caseload, such as case types, participating parties, and industries.
  • Judicial Reversal Report (trial court judge search)
    • Information on a trial court judge's record on appeal 
  • Judicial Motion Report (judge search) 
    • Information on judge's record in disposing of motions (information from criminal and bankruptcy dockets is excluded)

Westlaw also has a database designated for expert materials.

Lexis -- Litigation Profile Suit

To get there, go to the homepage of Lexis Advance and click on the drop-down menu from the top left corner. 

Lexis Litigation Profile Suite allows you to search profiles of expert witnesses, judges, and attorneys. You can also find relevant detailed information such as ruling histories (judges), practice histories (attorneys), case involvement (expert witnesses), publications, and news of that person. You can search by name and further refine it by locations (attorneys and expert witnesses), jurisdictions (judges) or area of expertise (expert witnesses). 

Here are what you can find under each profile (if applicable):

Judges -- Ruling History: 

  • Dockets, Jury Verdicts & Settlements, Cases, Administrative Materials, Briefs, Pleadings and Motions, Jury Instructions, Expert Witness Analysis. 

Attorneys -- Practice History

  • Dockets, Jury Verdicts & Settlements, Cases, Administrative Materials, Briefs, Pleadings and Motions, Jury Instructions, Expert Witness Analysis. 

Expert Witnesses -- Case Involvement

Bloomberg Law -- Litigation Analytics

At the homepage, click "Litigation Analytics" under "Law school Success -- Litigation Resources". You can also choose "Litigation & Dockets" from the left side menu and then click on "Litigation Analytics."

As part of Bloomberg Law's business intelligence product, Litigation Analytics allows you to search federal judge information, such as the average time one judge takes to resolves cases, his/her ruling history on dispositive motions, and how often they are overturned on appeal. This information can be helpful to litigators to evaluate potential impacts of judges and courts. It also allows you to search for litigation activities of companies and the law firms that represent them. 

After you search a federal judge by his/her name, a brief profile will appear at the top of the result page, which includes that judge's career history, most cited opinion, and news about that judge. 

Under the brief profile, there are graphics showing you the motion outcomes, appeal outcomes, length of cases by different case types, and appearances of law firms & case types of that judge. 

Free Online Resources

  • ALM Experts
    • This is an online database that contains profiles of expert witnesses, investigators, process servers, court reporters, consultants and litigation support professionals. You can search by name, area of expertise and location. 
  • ExpertLaw
    • Free online directory of expert witnesses and private investigators. You can browse by area of expertise and then refine your results by the location. 
  • Expert Witness Network 
    • A free searchable expert witness directory. Search by key terms or categories (area of expertise). 
  • LexVisio 
    • A searchable directory of expert witness and practice support personnel. Search by key terms or categories (area of expertise).
