Research Assistant Training Guide

Before You Start Your Research...

--What is the issue you are researching?

--What are likely search terms and phrases?

--What kind of secondary sources (books, law reviews, encyclopedias, ALR, etc.) are most likely to help you learn about this area of law?

--What kind of primary authority are you probably looking for? (cases, statutes, regulations?).

Some More Advice

Keep in mind that as long as you have your Bloomberg account through UT Law, you can use it for both academic work and paid employment. Bloomberg has many excellent secondary sources online, such as journal articles and handbooks, which can help you learn about a new area of law.

Finally, don’t forget that if you are stumped with a citation, an abbreviation, or just don’t know where to start, the UT Law Librarians will be happy to help you.
